In Shroudfall, terrain is not just a pretty backdrop; it's a strategic element that can make or break your game. Just as your models bring the battlefield to life, the terrain sets the stage for epic battles, adding depth and challenge to every encounter. But beyond aesthetics, terrain should be fair and strategic, ensuring that no player is at a disadvantage due to haphazard terrain placement.
We believe that players should have a say in the terrain they battle on. Whether you're maneuvering your forces through dense forests, scaling rocky cliffs, or taking cover behind ancient ruins, the terrain should complement your strategy and enhance the gameplay experience. After all, many of us have experienced those frustrating moments in tournaments where poorly placed terrain had too much impact on the flow of a game.
Terrain is as much a part of your battle plan as your army
Wise generals not only plan the placement and movement of their army but also on which terrain their army engages and how to use it to support their strategies. In Shroudfall, terrain pieces are part of your army list. While basic terrain pieces can be added for free to your army list, some other pieces may cost you points.
The Philosophy Behind Shroudfall Terrain
In Shroudfall, we've reimagined how terrain is integrated into the game to give players more control and strategic depth. Here's how we approach terrain:
Player-Driven Terrain Placement: Before the game begins, players collaboratively set up the battlefield. This ensures that both sides have an equal opportunity to influence the terrain, creating a balanced and fair environment.
Strategic List Building: Terrain is part of your army list, allowing you to choose pieces that align with your army's strengths and strategies. This adds another layer of tactical planning as you consider how best to utilize terrain to your advantage.
Dynamic Gameplay: By allowing players to place terrain, each game of Shroudfall becomes a unique experience. You'll need to think on your feet, adapting your tactics to the evolving battlefield and using terrain to outmaneuver your opponent.
Tips for Effective Terrain Use
Know Your Army: Understand how your units interact with different types of terrain. Some armies may excel in open spaces, while others thrive in cover or difficult terrain.
Deny and Control: Use terrain not only to benefit your army but also to hinder your opponent. Block line of sight, create chokepoints, and control key areas of the battlefield.
Spend Points Where It Matters: Terrain in Shroudfall is more than just scenery—it's a core element of the game that adds richness and strategic depth. By incorporating terrain into your army list and placing it collaboratively with your opponent, you can elevate your gameplay and create memorable battles.
